About Edward

I have always loved stories. Whether it was sneaking in extra chapters under the covers or listening to audiobooks on long drives or while falling asleep, acting in plays, or playing story-led games, so much of my early life was defined by fictional people in pursuit of hard to reach goals. I started reading early and I stayed reading often, and many of those early books shaped my tastes. From Enid Blyton's mysteries to adventures with Anthony Horowitz's Alex Rider. From journeys into wardrobes with C.S. Lewis or death with Garth Nix or heists with Eoin Colfer's Artemis Fowl. Into the past too, with Kevin Crossley Holland or E Nesbit.

Perhaps my first exposure, aged about 11 or 12 or so, to adult historical fiction though was Bernard Cornwell's Warlord.

I read widely across genres, but especially in historical fiction, literary fiction, fantasy, crime, mystery, and thriller (I have a large collection of penguin green crime classics), and select non-fiction, mostly history or nature writing. Lists of my favourite books of the last few years are available in the blog.

At the time of writing, my personal top 10 novels of all time (not necessarily in order) looks like this, or perhaps I should say these are 10 of my favourites as in truth there are probably another 20 or 30 I can think of on this level in my personal pantheon.

The English Patient - Michael Ondaatje

The Overstay - Richard Powers

The Pillars of the Earth - Ken Follett

A Gentleman in Moscow - Amor Towles

The Lions of Al-Rasan - Guy Gaviel Kay

Golden Hill - Francis Spufford

Great Circle - Maggie Shipstead

Perfume: The Story of a Murderer - Patrick Suskind

Circe: Madeline Miller

Birds Without Wings: Louis de Bernieres

After an initial career in sports marketing (sport has always been my other great passion), I've been a freelance writer, editor and pitch coach since 2019. Before that, my professional experience focused on writing, presenting, marketing, selling, and project management.

My debut novel, In His Grace was long listed for the Cheshire Novel Prize.

In my spare time, you can find me walking the dog, reading, running, on the golf course, or on a ski slope.

Originally from the UK, I live in Bermuda with my wife and daughter.
